My name is Naiara. I've always been fascinated by computers and programming, but what truly drives me is creating worlds. Alongside earning a Master's degree in Literature and Arts from Paris 7 Denis Diderot University, I've pursued studies in applied arts and computer science. Today, all these disciplines carry over into my work with 3D visuals, video, and web development.

I'm working on a blog section that will be live soon, where I'll dive deeper into all this and my interest in obsolete technologies. It's meant as an open-ended reflection and I look forward to sharing my thoughts with anyone curious.

Code

This website is entirely built with vanilla HTML and CSS, with a bit of JavaScript dynamically generating some of the HTML to avoid copying and pasting things to death. I usually work with JavaScript libraries like React.js and Three.js, often paired with styled-components or Sass for styling, so building this site without relying on any framework was a fun challenge.

I've also used Web Components here and there, because I was curious to try this browser-native way of making custom elements. I've discovered that Web Components are awesome if you hate being alive. For instance, it only takes around 666 lines of code to make a button clickable - granted this is still less than all the code a framework like React needs to load under the hood so you can write onClick={click}. Since I take any excuse not to leave my house, I have to admit that I actually enjoyed wandering the sewers of JavaScript. But if I decided to have a social life, I'd give a shot to Lit instead, which is a lightweight framework built on top of Web Components.

Design

For the UI and backgrounds of this site, I mainly used video game assets because that's also the workflow I follow when working in 3D. It's easier and faster to modify something that already looks great rather than starting from scratch, kind of like making music using sample CDs or synth presets. I'm amazed by the amount of work people put into crafting game textures, especially when they represent such a tiny number of pixels on a 3D model or in a level's decor, that's why I wanted to give credit. Another obvious benefit game assets have is that the files are extremly lightweight!

Images

Most images used for the backgrounds and buttons are tilesets or textures extracted from video games. They should be all listed here.

Many of the gifs used, including the banners and ads, have been shared around the Net for decades so it would be difficult to find the original source. I've collected those by browsing GifCities, which is a search engine for GeoCities animated GIFs.
