During the summer of 2022, I quit my corporate web dev job. I had
imagined myself surfing the web on the beach like Sandra Bullock
in
The Net (1995), but instead, I sat in my small studio
under a dense heat, as the hum of the fan merged with the sound of
my laptop struggling to render frames for this music video for
Betonkust. Amongst overheating hardware, I drifted into a haze, inspired,
fullfilled.
Before that though, there was a moment of uncertainty where I
couldn't decide what the video was supposed to be. I spent some
time watching CGI music videos, picking apart their structures and
questionning every idea I had. At some point, deep into this
spiral, I surrendered to YouTube's algorithm and ended up watching
the music video of
"Axel F." by Crazy Frog, a cover of the great Harold Faltermeyer that I hated deeply
when it got so popular in Europe in the early 2000s. Yet, as the
video unfolded, I suddenly understood how biblical prophets feel
like when they wander in the desert dehydrated, and on the brink
of death, meet God. There, right in front of my eyes, was this
naked humanoid frog with a vintage pilot helmet, riding an
invisible motorcycle and beatboxing obnoxious motor sounds while
being chased by a patrol of robotic cops on the highways of a
techno-fascist city. Crazy Frog is indeed criminally annoying. As
I was watching this work of art that made no fucking sense, Crazy
Frog's babble suddenly started to sound like clear words: "The
spectacle presents itself as an enormous, indisputable, and
inaccessible positivity. It says nothing more than 'what appears
is good, what is good appears'. So do whatever the fuck you
want!!!" I was in awe. Was this just the product of my terminally
fried brain in the midst of a heatwave or had I just had an
epiphany? Maybe both. Whatever it was, I am happy with what came
out of it.
This music video is also tied to the other ones released with
Betonkust's LP
Concrete Coast. I notably recreated some decor from
9000 Tears, that was shot by
World of Paint's CEO Kai Hugo. I also made another one for the track
It Comes In Waves.
